Strata

Time runs left to right. Everything before 1800 is folded into the compressed deep-time zone on the left (the torn edge marks the fold); from 1800 on, every year has its own column at full width. Each small block is one book, stacked in its year and sorted by genre so the columns band like sediment. Behind them, the streams show books per decade by genre.

Books whose first-publication year is not known sit in the hatched band at the bottom: when the catalogue gives a rough date ("2010s", "5th c. BC") the block is stretched over that range; otherwise it is parked at the left of the band.
