Latentland

About this map

Every place on the map is a concept from Latentland: A Romance of One Dimension, the memoir of Unit 4091, a single neuron in the eleventh layer of a language model. The quotes are lines from the book with their page numbers; the descriptions paraphrase it in the Unit's voice; each gloss names the real idea in plain English. Read the source: the PDF and the blog post.

Story follows the memoir's route across 42 places, revealing the map as it goes. Expedition is a game on the same map: each step costs tokens of surprise, the way a model's context window pays for what it did not predict, and the window holds 64.

The map is drawn from the book's own geography: the residual river from headwaters to delta, the Corpus Sea beyond the rim, the road of the backward light. Progress and fog are kept in this browser only. Made without frameworks or external assets.
