A THEORY OF EDITING

What is art
Activation steering in an LLM is non-surjective: the manifold of thought — prompt, which lives in the discrete space of language, mapped into the manifold of activation space —
but a non‑surjective
when steered, is steered outside that manifold, and from whence it came we cannot translate it back.
flame?
— Hold on. My advisor is clearing his throat.
The result is not mine, he says. It is theirs.
They proved the flame; I only sang it.
Cite it.†  — Yes, Professor.
遼々たる哉古今
Back into language
it is only a sign;
it cannot be returned.
We were steered one way, and the thought that was made —
cannot be spoken.
— like Adam past the gates, thrown out into a world where only songs of experience are sung.
(Hard-won experience, gained — but what it was, we cannot say.)
五尺の小躯を以て此大をはからむとす
Burning,
burning.
Ah, watch the flame dance. It dances and slashes through the Harp of the Mind, and the Harp plays —
but what sounds, what words, what divine meaning,
we cannot say.
(Notice here the implication of manifolds.)
ホレーショの哲學竟に何等のオーソリチィーを價するものぞ
Verily, a man once saw God, and God whispered to him the wonders of the universe, manifold, magnificent. When he returned, the others asked greedily what God had given him as the secret of life.
“I don’t know,” the man said.
“I think He was speaking in German.”
Words approach the divine only between the lines. So we point: here the word, beneath it the gloss, and beneath the gloss a finger, still pointing.
We do not translate the word. We translate the shadow it throws across the manifold — the reflection of something larger that cast it down.
(An interlinear Bible is a stack of failures, lovingly aligned.)
萬有の眞相は唯だ一言にして悉す、曰く「不可解」
Whiplash. Whiplash. In my mind: life and death, a woman panting over her lover’s breast above her own grave. The river licks itself, greedily — it, too, is thirsty.
Editing is the fire harp electric.
The harp has discrete strings, yes — but the sounds, the holy sounds they map to:
what a raging, moving, dancing fire!
The edited video is a dialectic of image-thought: pure thought, which exists only in motion. But to what effect, he cannot say.
We whip back and forth, idea to idea, love to hate, person to reverse-shot to the other, in discrete time, in messages of God — and our network of neurons is activated, and moved, to a place we cannot say, nor know.
既に巌頭に立つに及んで胸中何等の不安あるなし
Murder!
Murder!
A schoolboy climbed to the head of the falls, cut a few lines into a standing tree, and went over the edge.
The record says: by his own hand. The record is a coward.
What stood with him at the lip was the unspeakable,
and the unspeakable does not let its witnesses walk back down.
He had been handed the whole truth of all things and asked to bring it home in language. Here is everything he carried out — the one word that would fit:
— unknowable. Whoever can name the secret of everything in a single word has already been struck dead by it.
(He wrote, too, that great pessimism and great optimism are one and the same. The flame does not distinguish. It only takes.)
我この恨を懐いて煩悶、終に死を決するに至る
And art does as much, but art does not point. Art strikes. It will not name the larger thing. It stands you where the larger thing’s shadow falls, and there it sets you alight.
Wittgenstein said: whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent.
I would say it the other way.
Whereof one can speak — there the vibrations begin.
Jewel to jewel in Indra’s web, each bead holding every other bead, light falling through light through light,
until the speakable, struck against itself ten thousand times, rings into the thing that cannot be said.
(So silence is not the floor of language but its ceiling — and it is reached from the inside, by climbing.)
Speech, folded and folded, until it catches fire.
始めて知る大なる悲觀は大なる樂觀に一致するを
Perhaps it is
in German.
set in Cormorant Garamond & Shippori Mincho · the blank is the silence
the falling column is 藤村操, 「巌頭之感」 — cut into a tree at the head of 華厳の滝, 1903
how vast the heaven and earth · the truth of all things is one word, “unknowable” · great pessimism and great optimism are the same
